These beautiful animals
are called Flying Foxes or Fruit Bats.
They are located on the western side of
the island, in the village of Kolovai,
about ten and a half miles from the
capital. You can't miss them, they are
right along the main highway, hanging in
casuarina (ironwood) trees. The funny
thing about these animals is that they
hang and squeak during the day, but at
night it's quiet so the people can sleep.
The bats leave to look for fruit, which
is the only food they eat, and then
return home before dawn. It is forbidden
to touch the flying foxes because they
belong to the Royal Family.
